Claudia Winkleman reveals why she picked Richard E Grant to be a Traitor as actor admits

Claudia Winkleman revealed why she picked Richard E Grant to be a Traitor after he made one of the biggest gaffes in the history of the show.

The host, 54, appeared on Celebrity Traitors spin-off show Uncloaked on Friday, after the grand final.

Claudia was asked by Ed Gamble why she picked Richard and what she made of the moment where he confessed to being a Traitor.

Claudia said: ‘We couldn’t not pick him. If you’d have been in that gold chat. It was what he wanted. I don’t know if you’ve ever faced a three-year-old who really wants an ice-cream?

‘The answer is: “yes, Richard. I can’t not give this to you. He really wanted to be a Traitor and he was excellent – at the beginning.

‘He was even excellent when he said: “I am a Traitor”. We’ve never had that before. I dropped my jacket potato. That was huge. I dropped it next to the clothing rail, every single item was sent back with flecks of tuna.’

The actor, 69, was the first person to be banished in the current series of the BBC show after he revealed he was a Traitor when asked by comedian Joe Lycett, 38.

In what has been dubbed the biggest gaffe in Traitors history, Richard said in a room full of his Faithful co-stars he had been chosen, before trying to cover it up by saying he was ‘manifesting’ being handed a cloak.

Reflecting on his mistake, he told Claudia: ‘Thank you that I don’t have to go and live in Greenland because I have been forgiven by the public for my absolutely moronic, idiotic, mistake.

‘I should have said, I was joking Joe Lycett.’

Viewers watched on Friday as Faithfuls Romesh Ranganathan, 48, and Sebastian Croft, 24, were crowned the winners after a nail-biting final.

Viewers applauded the duo for beating Traitors Maya, 32, and Kenny, 29, who went under the radar until Thursday’s episode, when their fellow Traitor James Acaster revealed his identity in a moment of stress.

The pair will split £83,000 between their chosen charities.

They shared an embrace as host Claudia Winkleman congratulated them on their big win.

The comedian said: ‘I trusted Bash and I was right to. I cannot believe it! I just really hope my mum is proud.’

Croft broke down in tears and added: ‘That was just incredible. This might actually be the best day of my life.

The duo then joined the host and celebrity finalists outside the picturesque Ardross Castle, where they raised a glass around the fire pit.

At the beginning of the final episode, Maya and Kenny murdered Michael Sheen.

As he departed, the actor said: ‘Ah the time has come. I’m gutted that I got so close to the end but it has been unforgettable. But I am happy I got so close to the end.’

Tensions also reached boiling point at the final roundtable, with Maya and James Blunt embroiled in a heated exchange.

But in a devastating twist, Kenny turned on his fellow Traitor, betraying Maya by voting for her,

Before being crowned the winners during the Celebrity Traitors final episode, Acaster took centre stage on Thursday. And in a show first, the comedian revealed he was a Traitor at the roundtable before the vote had even begun.

Acaster and Jama, 32, both came under fire, as the Faithfuls linked them to Ross Kemp’s murder in plain sight.

Michael Sheen, 57, quizzed Acaster, 41, on the specifics of the murder in plain sight, including how he knew about the deadly perfume bottle.

‘I understand how you’ve put it all together,’ Acaster responded, adding: ‘I can’t really argue that it sounds feasible, and that sounds like it could have happened. I can promise you that I didn’t spray him.’

Then, speaking to the group, he shockingly said: ‘I just want to explain my situation. I was made a Traitor without wanting to be.

‘I’ve had a unique experience on this that no one has had before, where I wanted to be a Faithful; that’s all I wanted to be. I couldn’t just go, “Guys, it’s me, vote for me.” But that’s all I can do, really.’

Filming was paused as Acaster became ‘anxious’ and had to gather himself before making his speech.

‘The pressure got to him, and it was clear he was finding it difficult. Everyone agreed filming should be stopped before things got too heated,’ one insider told the Daily Mail.

‘Everyone was aware of the pressure getting to James throughout the series; it was difficult to watch him struggling.’

Acaster received all of the votes, and before his exit told his fellow celebrities: ‘I am, reluctantly, a Traitor,’ adding that a ‘weight has been lifted off his shoulders’.
