THE OPERA PROJECT

The San Francisco World Music Festival invites you to be a part of making its 13th season the most successful season yet. For over a year now we have been planning, researching, rehearsing, composing, arranging, and fundraising to bring to the stage The Opera Project: Voices From the Otherside… The Opera Project is the culmination of a three-year trilogy, which included The Ritual Project (2010) and The Epic Project (2011). With The Opera Project we are weaving together the powerful voices of world opera traditions from, Azerbaijan, China, India, Korea, Tibet and beyond. This is a once in a lifetime event joining the shamanic spirit of Korean P’ansori with the haunting vocals of Tibetan Ache Lhamo; the soul-stirring melodies of Azeri Mugham opera with the percussive precision of Beijing opera; and the raga-based opera of South India with the beautiful harmonies of early Italian Baroque opera.

Our core creative team has traveled to Baku, Azerbaijan, Seoul, South Korea, and Beijing China to recruit the highest caliber musicians for this project, which will culminate in 4 unique evenings of performance in San Francisco this November 8-11. Now we need your help!

Inter-cultural and Inter-generational

The San Francisco World Music Festival prides itself on producing groundbreaking intercultural performances that bridge the musical and cultural divides between artists. Our artists spend painstaking hours solving unique musical and artistic puzzles that unlock new discoveries in intercultural collaboration.  It’s hard we work, but we love it!
Another point of pride for us is our Festival’s Youth Orchestra. We work with master musicians and their students from around the world whom we bring together to carve out new pathways of both musical and interpersonal understanding.

These highly trained young artists will share the stage with the opera artists coming from Azerbaijan, China, Korea and beyond to create an inter-cultural and inter-generational ensemble equally at ease with Korean shamanic rhythmic patterns and Azeri mugham melodies.  There is nothing quite like witnessing the warmth and passion of artists of all ages performing together with such joy, focus, fire, and mutual appreciation for one another’s talents and traditions! Now you can be a part of stoking that fire and bringing that joy to life!

Watch Live From Anywhere in the World!

If you are in the San Francisco Bay Area we hope to see you at the shows in November. If not, you can still join us by tuning in to our webcast.  Watch from home whether your home is in Baku, Chennai, Seoul, Taiwan, Madrid, or Spain. Experience in real-time what your donation has helped to create!

We Still Need Your Help!

As you can imagine, this kind of artistic risk-taking can’t come to fruition just through talent and vision alone.  From visas, to airline tickets, to hotels, artist fees, and theater rental – there are many expenses that go into creating a project as complex as this.  We have worked very hard to fundraise for The Opera Project but we still need your help! No donation is too small.  We are trying to raise at least $15,000 between now and midnight on November 15th. Whether you can give $10 or $10,000, every little bit helps get over the finish line. We can’t do it without you, only with you!

Cool Donor Gifts!

We deeply appreciate your help and we want to show you how grateful we are by offering an array of gifts connected unique to The Opera Project. Take home exclusive tracks from festival artists.  Get passes a show or to the whole festival.  Enjoy it again and again by owning a festival DVD.  Attend a pre-festival house concert and hear world opera artists up close and personal.  Or travel with our artistic team to their next exotic location as they prepare for next year’s festival.  Each gift, whether big or small, bears the creative stamp of The San Francisco World Music Festival.

Can’t Donate, But Still Want to Help?

Even if you can’t donate right now you can still help us by spreading the word about our campaign.  Share this website with your friends on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media.  Ask your friends to do the same. A personal ask always works best.  Whether you are a long-time member of our extended world music family or a brand new fan, tell people how this works moves you and why you are encouraging them to support us.  Help us help ourselves and share in the wealth of music and culture that The San Francisco World Music Festival shares with you.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!!
